Checklist of the Vascular Plants Comprising the Flora of Martha’s Vineyard & Dukes County Massachusetts (Including Nomans Land)
This checklist has been based on the work of Sorrie and Somers (1999) and Swanson and Knapp (1999) and acknowledgement of these earlier authors is made with great gratitude for their pioneering work and significant contributions to our knowledge of the Vineyard flora. Entries in this checklist followed by an asterisk (*) constitute new records for Dukes County and follow the report submitted in December, 2005, by Arthur Haines, Research Botanist, New England Wild Flower Society, based on his and previous work on Nomans Land. A copy of his report is available for study at the PHA Library.
Geographic affinity is given for so-called “indicator species.” A “B” following the taxon entry indicates a northern or boreal affinity, while a “CP” signifies a coastal plain or southwestern affinity. Names mentioned in parenthesis are ones used for the taxon listed here in the Flora of Martha’s Vineyard (Swanson & Knapp, 1999).
